Rooibaard is a landrace from Southern Africa that may have originated in Transkei. It was originally called Swazi Red because of its smattering of red hairs all over the buds, whereas most other strains have far fewer hairs and less distinct covers.

Rooibaard was the most popular strain of cannabis in South Africa from the 1970s to 1990, but its popularity waned and it is now virtually unknown in the cannabis community.
